SUMMARY:Let’s Eat! Films on Food: Farmageddon
DESCRIPTION:Americans’ right to access fresh\, healthy foods of their choice is under attack. Farmageddon tells the story of small\, family farms that were providing safe\, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop\, sometimes through violent ac-tion\, by agents of misguided government bureaucracies\, and seeks to figure out why. Filmmaker Kristin Canty’s quest to find healthy food for her four children turned into an educational journey to discover why access to these foods was being threatened. What she found were policies that favor agribusiness and factory farms over small family-operated farms selling fresh foods to their communities. Instead of focusing on the source of food safety problems — most often the industrial food chain — policymakers and regulators implement and enforce solutions that target and often drive out of business small farms that have proven themselves more than capable of producing safe\, healthy food\, but buckle under the crushing weight of government regulations and excessive enforcement actions. Farmageddon highlights the urgency of food freedom\, encouraging farmers and consumers alike to take action to preserve individuals’ rights to access food of their choice and farmers’ rights to produce these foods safely and free from unreasona-bly burdensome regulations. The film serves to put policymakers and regulators on notice that there is a growing movement of people aware that their freedom to choose the foods they want is in danger\, a movement that is taking action with its dollars and its voting power to protect and preserve the dwindling number of family farms that are struggling to survive. $9 Members / $13 Public Tickets can be purchased online\, www.CinemaArtsCentre.org at the box office during theatre hours or by calling Brown Paper Tickets toll free at 1-800-838-3006

SUMMARY:Let’s Eat! Films on Food: All in this Tea
DESCRIPTION:Follow American tea expert David Lee Hoffman into the fascinating and very tasty world of tea as he journeys to China in search of the world’s finest teas at a screening of ALL IN THIS TEA on Tuesday\, March 6 at 7:30pm followed by tea-tasting at Cinema Arts Centre\, 423 Park Ave\, Huntington 631-423-7611 www.CinemaArtsCentre.org The latest film from distinguished documentarian Les Blank\, in collaboration with co-director Gina Leibrecht\, follows American tea importer David Lee Hoffman to some of the most remote regions of China in search of the world’s finest teas. Hoffman is obsessed; during his youth he spent four years with Tibetan monks in Nepal\, which included a friendship with the Dalai Lama\, and was introduced to some of the finest of teas. Unable to find anything but insipid tea bags in the U.S.\, Hoffman began traveling to China\, the homeland of tea. There\, he struggles against language barriers and Byzantine business codes to convince the Chinese that the farmers make better tea than the factories and that their craft should be honored and preserved. This craft cannot be learned from a book\, but has been handed down through generations of tea makers for thousands of years. He drags the reluctant tea factory aficionados up a lush\, terraced mountainside and brings them face to face with those “dirty” farmers. In an ironic twist\, Hoffman reintroduces them to one of their country’s oldest traditions. But Hoffman is even a step ahead of his own country in that he is advocating “fair trade” and organics. Images of the farmers standing on urban street corners selling a week’s harvest for three dollars\, in the shadow of China’s increasing number of high rises\, illustrate the paradox that stepping into the modern world imposes. Tea experts James Norwood Pratt\, Gaetano Kazuo Maida\, and Winnie W. Yu provide the fundamentals of tea\, lending weight to Hoffman’s endeavor. $9 Members / $13 Public / includes reception and Tea-Tasting by The Tea Plant www.theteaplant.com and Sacred Rose www.sacredrosetea.com Tickets can be purchased online\, www.CinemaArtsCentre.org at the box office during theatre hours or by calling Brown Paper Tickets toll free at 1-800-838-3006

SUMMARY:Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism
DESCRIPTION:Author and Social Psychologist Dr. Melanie Joy Why We Love Dogs\, Eat Pigs\, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism Saturday\, November 12th\, 2011\, 10:00 a.m. The Green Sanctuary Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock invites friends and neighbors throughout Long Island to this free presentation\, with a light lunch to follow. “The national UU Ethical Eating Core Team has commended Dr. Joy’s presentation as an excellent way to engage the topic of Ethical Eating. In her captivating slide show\, Dr. Joy explains carnism\, the invisible belief system that shapes our perception of the meat we eat\, so that we love some animals and eat others without knowing why. Using powerful imagery\, thought-provoking analyses\, and a compelling narrative\, Dr. Joy elucidates how\, although unjust ideologies (racism\, sexism\, ableism\, carnism\, etc.) all are unique\, the mentality that enables such interlocking systems is strikingly similar. When unnoticed\, these ideologies can cause us to act against our core values\, our own interests\, and the interests of others. Melanie Joy\, Ph.D. Ed.M. is a Harvard-educated psychologist and professor of psychology and sociology at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston\, and is the leading researcher on carnism. Dr. Joy has written articles on psychology\, animal protection\, and social justice. She is a longtime activist for social and environmental justice and animal welfare\, explains how carnism\, like other unjust ideologies\, is sustained by complex\, hidden social and psychological mechanisms\, and it is most harmful when unrecognized. Audiences appreciate Dr. Joy’s accessible\, engaging and levelheaded approach\, regardless of their dietary choices. Age guidance for this presentation: 15 to adult.” For more information\, call Linda at 516.627.6560 ext. 141. 48 Shelter Rock Rd. SUMMARY:Slow Food, the Sustainable Food Movement and Occupy Wall Street
DESCRIPTION:Food justice advocates are finding solidarity in the protests that have expanded across the country\, against the unchecked influence of big money interests\, greed and corruption. The revolving door between multinational food companies\, lobbying firms and government has led to a system that leaves the our farmers struggling or drives them out of business\, consumers with poor quality\, limited choice and a food system that is just plain broken. Here are a few voices on the subject: From the Civil Eats website\, a great source of food policy information: “The connection of the protests with food\, of course\, runs from the local to the global\, the specific to the ephemeral. Food justice advocates are connecting with Occupy sites all around the country to donate fresh\, healthy\, local food or to help find kitchen space. On a broader philosophical level\, as Mark Bittman writes http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/11/finally-making-sense-on-wall-street/ in the Times\, “Whether we’re talking about food\, politics\, healthcare\, housing\, the environment\, or banking\, the big question remains the same: How do we bring about fundamental change?” But there are also clear and specific reasons that all of us working for a just and fair food system\, as the food movement should make the connection between our work and Occupy Wall Street explicit and strong. In the U.S. today\, the richest one percent hold 40 percent of the wealth\, while almost one in five Americans is on food stamps. Rampant Wall Street speculation on commodities is driving up food costs\, small farmers are being driven off their land\, and agribusiness holds monopoly control of our seeds and stores. In this climate\, the struggle against massive wealth disparities\, unregulated financial institutions\, and excessive corporate power is our struggle as well. Two points in the Declaration of the Occupation of New York City <http://nycga.cc/2011/09/30/declaration-of-the-occupation-of-new-york-city/> address the food system. While barely scratching the surface of the potential connections\, the protesters have provided an important opening for the food movement. Will we seize it?” To read more http://civileats.com/2011/10/13/why-the-food-movement-should-occupy-wall-street/ From the Slow Food USA Blog: The Path to Legislative Impact Heats Up with Food Day www.slowfoodusa.org/index.php/slow_food/blog_post/the_path_to_legislative_impact_heats_up_with_food_day/ Local Action Centerfood Co-op\, Sustainable Sea Cliff Cooperative\, Slow Food Huntington and Live Island Café have joined forces to provide material support for the Occupy Wall Street encampment in Zuccotti Park\, renamed Liberty Square. Anticipating increasingly difficult conditions as the movement advances in the face of cold weather\, these organizations are collecting clothing\, food\, and blankets to bring to the square on a regular basis. These organizations have found welcome support in the Occupy Wall Street movement for sustainable\, earth friendly alternatives to the corporate food system. Our commitment to small scale farmers and producers is fully consistent with calls worldwide for an economic model that rewards humane and equitable deployment of resources and shuns a short-sighted\, profit-above-all manipulation of capital. Our organizations are grateful to Occupy Wall Street inspiring students\, labor unions\, professionals\, middle class and poor to assert a fundamental truth: the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the few to the detriment of the many is inherently wrong\, and cannot continue. Centerfood Co-op\, Sustainable Sea Cliff Cooperative\, Slow Food Huntington and Live Island Café are employing their mailing lists and extensive community contacts to appeal for donations and coordinate delivery of goods to downtown Manhattan. Occupy Wall Street has an outpost on the North Shore. Contact: Christopher Moylan 631-424-2873
