SUMMARY:MARK YOUR CALENDARS, June 17th, Largest Anti-Fracking Rally in New York History
DESCRIPTION: New York stands at a crossroads; this is our moment to decide the course of history. Come to our No to Fracking/Yes to Renewable Energy Rally: What: New York Crossroads: Rally to Stop Fracking and Demand Renewable Energy When: Monday\, June 17th\, 12pm-3pm Where: Rally and March in East Capitol Lawn\, Albany\, NY Transportation: A sign up link of buses to the rally from Binghamton\, Buffalo\, Ithaca\, Long Island\, New Paltz\, New York City\, Queens (The Rockaways)\, Rochester\, Syracuse\, Westchester and other areas will announced next week! Car Pool: If you would like to set up a car pool please email Corinne Rosen at crosen@fwwatch.org Please sign up HERE to RSVP and for preliminary transportation options. Please sign up HERE to RSVP on FACEBOOK and SHARE. Here’s what its about: On Wednesday\, June 17\, 1885\, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor\, where she has stood as our nation’s symbol of freedom ever since. On Monday\, June 17\, 2013\, citizens from across New York—from Long Island to Niagara Falls—will arrive in Albany to demand freedom from dirty energy\, calling on Governor Cuomo to reject fracking and lead the nation in constructing a renewable energy economy here and now in New York. At this march and rally\, the anti-fracking movement will\, for the first time\, join with business leaders\, faith leaders\, health professionals\, elected officials\, farmers\, and youth to demand the renewable energy jobs that our families and communities want and deserve. New York is at a crossroads. In one direction: more ruinous dependency on dirty\, dangerous fossil fuels. This path requires we blow apart the bedrock of our state and inject it with toxic chemicals. Providing only temporary\, dangerous jobs\, it leads to accidents\, explosions\, poisoned water\, polluted air\, contaminated food\, public health disasters and climate catastrophe. This road chains us to the past and ransoms our children’s future. Running in the other direction is the road to renewable energy based on wind\, water\, and sunlight. This path leaves our communities unfractured and provides long-term\, safe jobs to New Yorkers. This path creates an infrastructure that will not cost us the water we drink\, the air we breathe or the health of our children. This path will make New York a leader in energy independence and\, once more\, a beacon of hope for the world. This path is the one we demand because our lives literally depend on it. Governor Cuomo has said\, “We will not allow the national paralysis over climate change to stop us from pursuing the necessary path for the future.” We agree. Here in New York\, where we have watched our subways fill with seawater and witnessed Hurricanes Irene\, Lee and Sandy wash away our communities\, we now call on our governor to reject the climate-destroying practice of fracking and take aggressive strides towards a 100% renewable energy economy. On June 17th\, we invite people from every corner of New York State to gather at the State Capitol in Albany. Here\, we will stand united to demand that Governor Cuomo reject fracking and blaze a trail to a renewable energy future. Join us for this historic event as we rally in the East Capitol Lawn and march in the streets surrounding the Capitol building. The moment of power is now! What: New York Crossroads: Rally to Stop Fracking and Demand Renewable Energy When: Monday\, June 17th\, 12pm-3pm Where: Rally and March in East Capitol Lawn\, Albany\, NY Transportation: A sign up link of buses to the rally from Binghamton\, Buffalo\, Ithaca\, Long Island\, New Paltz\, New York City\, Queens (The Rockaways)\, Rochester\, Syracuse\, Westchester and other areas will announced next week! Car Pool: If you would like to set up a car pool please email Corinne Rosen crosen@fwwatch.org Please sign up HERE to RSVP and for preliminary transportation options. Please sign up HERE to RSVP on FACEBOOK and SHARE. Sponsored by: New Yorkers Against Fracking\, Food & Water Watch\, Frack Action\, Catskill Mountainkeeper\, United for Action\, NYPIRG\, Citizens Environmental Coalition\, The Alliance for a Green Economy and many more to be announced! Thank you and see you in Albany!

SUMMARY:May 25th, Rally Against Monsanto
DESCRIPTION: On May 25\, activists around the world will unite to March Against Monsanto. Why do we march? Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors\, infertility and birth defects. In the United States\, the FDA\, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population\, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives\, and we feel that’s a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-lead research on the long-term effects of GMO products. Recently\, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed “Monsanto Protection Act” that\, among other things\, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto’s genetically-modified seeds. For too long\, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world’s food supply\, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds and genetic makeup. Monsanto’s GMO seeds are harmful to the environment; for example\, scientists have indicated they have caused colony collapse among the world’s bee population. Click here for a list of locations

SUMMARY:May 17th, Medea Benjamin, author of “Drone Warfare-Killing by Remote Control” book signing
DESCRIPTION:Drone Warfare is a comprehensive look at the growing menace of robotic warfare\, with an extensive analysis of who is producing the drones\, where they are being used\, who “pilots” these unmanned planes\, who are the victims and what are the legal and moral implications. In vivid\, readable style\, the book also looks at what activists\, lawyers and scientists are doing to ground the drones\, and ways to move forward. In reality\, writes Benjamin\, the assassinations we are carrying out via drones will come back to haunt us when others start doing the same thing—to us

SUMMARY:Food & Water Watch POTLUCK!
DESCRIPTION:Please bring food or drink to share! Fracking involves the injection of a toxic soup of water\, chemicals\, and sand underground to explode rock formations that contain gas. The process produces radioactive wastewater\, climate-changing methane emissions\, air pollution\, and groundwater contamination. This soil contamination and pollution\, combined with land development and water consumption\, threaten the health\, safety and viability of New York’s production of dairy products\, fruit and vegetbles\, beer\, wine and other foods. It could have a devastating impact on the pride of our state. This is why hundreds of farmers\, brewers\, vintners\, chefs and other food producers are joining with consumer\, health\, environmental and food organizations in calling on Governor Cuomo to ban fracking in New York.

SUMMARY:Sustainability Institute at Molloy College Presents: Sustainable Living Film Series March 14th — The Island President
DESCRIPTION: You are cordially invited to the Sustainable Living Film Series screening of the award winning documentary The Island President. The Sustainable Living Film Series is a documentary series presented by the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College that screens films with a focus on environmental protection and sustainability\, and features a different organizational partner for each presentation. Jon Shenk’s The Island President is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives\, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced—the literal survival of his country and everyone in it. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after thirty years of despotic rule\, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world\, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable. The Island President captures Nasheed’s first year of office\, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009\, where the film provides a rare glimpse of the political horse-trading that goes on at such a top-level global assembly. Nasheed is unusually candid about revealing his strategies—leveraging the Maldives’ underdog position as a tiny country\, harnessing the power of media\, and overcoming deadlocks through an appeal to unity with other developing nations. When hope fades for a written accord to be signed\, Nasheed makes a stirring speech which salvages an agreement. Despite the modest size of his country\, Mohamed Nasheed has become one of the leading international voices for urgent action on climate change. Vegan food\, popcorn and socializing at 6:00. Film starts at 7:15. Discussion following the film. Running time: 101 minutes. To RSVP or for more info call 516.678.5000 ext.7562 or email si@molloy.edu

SUMMARY:Forward On Climate: Long Island Bus Tickets
DESCRIPTION:In the context of a rapidly changing climate\, the Sierra Club and 350.org are co-sponsoring the "Forward on Climate" Rally\, to demand that President Obama creates a strong climate policy. The rally will take place in Washington\, DC\, on Sunday\, February 17th\, 2013. We will all be playing a pivotal role\, to make this the largest climate rally in the history of the United States\, with an expected attendance of over 20\,000. With President Obama about to begin his second term\, it is critical that he hears from his constituents about the importance of championing strong climate policy. Superstorm Sandy has reminded us\, just how vulnerable Long Island can be to climate change. That is why it is critical that Long Island is represented at the rally. We filled the first bus in just one week\, so we got a second bus! There will now be 2 buses departing Long Island to join the rally. We will have 3 pick up spots the morning of the event. The first pick up is at 5:30am\, on the campus of Stony Brook University at the West Campus loop\, near Staller Center and the Administration Building. The second pick up is at 6am\, at the Park n' Ride\, off of Rt.110 in Melville\, and the last stop is at 6:30am\, at Christopher Morely Park\, off of the LIE at exit 36. We will be returning directly after the rally. We are asking $35 to cover the cost of the bus\, and we welcome additional donations. Any donation will go to cover the cost for someone who can’t afford to go. If you want to come\, but can't afford the price of a ticket\, please contact the coordinator. We might have gotten donations to help cover the cost of your ticket. SPACE IS LIMITED\, so please sign up quickly if you plan on joining us. PLEASE CHECK BACK WITH THIS PAGE AS THE EVENT NEARS FOR UPDATES AND ANY CHANGES. Please let the bus coordinator know which stop you are planning to be at\, to get on the bus. SUMMARY:Let’s Eat! Films on Food: Farmageddon
DESCRIPTION:Americans’ right to access fresh\, healthy foods of their choice is under attack. Farmageddon tells the story of small\, family farms that were providing safe\, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop\, sometimes through violent ac-tion\, by agents of misguided government bureaucracies\, and seeks to figure out why. Filmmaker Kristin Canty’s quest to find healthy food for her four children turned into an educational journey to discover why access to these foods was being threatened. What she found were policies that favor agribusiness and factory farms over small family-operated farms selling fresh foods to their communities. Instead of focusing on the source of food safety problems — most often the industrial food chain — policymakers and regulators implement and enforce solutions that target and often drive out of business small farms that have proven themselves more than capable of producing safe\, healthy food\, but buckle under the crushing weight of government regulations and excessive enforcement actions. Farmageddon highlights the urgency of food freedom\, encouraging farmers and consumers alike to take action to preserve individuals’ rights to access food of their choice and farmers’ rights to produce these foods safely and free from unreasona-bly burdensome regulations. The film serves to put policymakers and regulators on notice that there is a growing movement of people aware that their freedom to choose the foods they want is in danger\, a movement that is taking action with its dollars and its voting power to protect and preserve the dwindling number of family farms that are struggling to survive. $9 Members / $13 Public Tickets can be purchased online\, www.CinemaArtsCentre.org at the box office during theatre hours or by calling Brown Paper Tickets toll free at 1-800-838-3006

SUMMARY:Let’s Eat! Films on Food: All in this Tea
DESCRIPTION:Follow American tea expert David Lee Hoffman into the fascinating and very tasty world of tea as he journeys to China in search of the world’s finest teas at a screening of ALL IN THIS TEA on Tuesday\, March 6 at 7:30pm followed by tea-tasting at Cinema Arts Centre\, 423 Park Ave\, Huntington 631-423-7611 www.CinemaArtsCentre.org The latest film from distinguished documentarian Les Blank\, in collaboration with co-director Gina Leibrecht\, follows American tea importer David Lee Hoffman to some of the most remote regions of China in search of the world’s finest teas. Hoffman is obsessed; during his youth he spent four years with Tibetan monks in Nepal\, which included a friendship with the Dalai Lama\, and was introduced to some of the finest of teas. Unable to find anything but insipid tea bags in the U.S.\, Hoffman began traveling to China\, the homeland of tea. There\, he struggles against language barriers and Byzantine business codes to convince the Chinese that the farmers make better tea than the factories and that their craft should be honored and preserved. This craft cannot be learned from a book\, but has been handed down through generations of tea makers for thousands of years. He drags the reluctant tea factory aficionados up a lush\, terraced mountainside and brings them face to face with those “dirty” farmers. In an ironic twist\, Hoffman reintroduces them to one of their country’s oldest traditions. But Hoffman is even a step ahead of his own country in that he is advocating “fair trade” and organics. Images of the farmers standing on urban street corners selling a week’s harvest for three dollars\, in the shadow of China’s increasing number of high rises\, illustrate the paradox that stepping into the modern world imposes. Tea experts James Norwood Pratt\, Gaetano Kazuo Maida\, and Winnie W. Yu provide the fundamentals of tea\, lending weight to Hoffman’s endeavor. $9 Members / $13 Public / includes reception and Tea-Tasting by The Tea Plant www.theteaplant.com and Sacred Rose www.sacredrosetea.com Tickets can be purchased online\, www.CinemaArtsCentre.org at the box office during theatre hours or by calling Brown Paper Tickets toll free at 1-800-838-3006

SUMMARY:Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism
DESCRIPTION:Author and Social Psychologist Dr. Melanie Joy Why We Love Dogs\, Eat Pigs\, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism Saturday\, November 12th\, 2011\, 10:00 a.m. The Green Sanctuary Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock invites friends and neighbors throughout Long Island to this free presentation\, with a light lunch to follow. “The national UU Ethical Eating Core Team has commended Dr. Joy’s presentation as an excellent way to engage the topic of Ethical Eating. In her captivating slide show\, Dr. Joy explains carnism\, the invisible belief system that shapes our perception of the meat we eat\, so that we love some animals and eat others without knowing why. Using powerful imagery\, thought-provoking analyses\, and a compelling narrative\, Dr. Joy elucidates how\, although unjust ideologies (racism\, sexism\, ableism\, carnism\, etc.) all are unique\, the mentality that enables such interlocking systems is strikingly similar. When unnoticed\, these ideologies can cause us to act against our core values\, our own interests\, and the interests of others. Melanie Joy\, Ph.D. Ed.M. is a Harvard-educated psychologist and professor of psychology and sociology at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston\, and is the leading researcher on carnism. Dr. Joy has written articles on psychology\, animal protection\, and social justice. She is a longtime activist for social and environmental justice and animal welfare\, explains how carnism\, like other unjust ideologies\, is sustained by complex\, hidden social and psychological mechanisms\, and it is most harmful when unrecognized. Audiences appreciate Dr. Joy’s accessible\, engaging and levelheaded approach\, regardless of their dietary choices. Age guidance for this presentation: 15 to adult.” For more information\, call Linda at 516.627.6560 ext. 141. 48 Shelter Rock Rd. SUMMARY:Slow Food, the Sustainable Food Movement and Occupy Wall Street
DESCRIPTION:Food justice advocates are finding solidarity in the protests that have expanded across the country\, against the unchecked influence of big money interests\, greed and corruption. The revolving door between multinational food companies\, lobbying firms and government has led to a system that leaves the our farmers struggling or drives them out of business\, consumers with poor quality\, limited choice and a food system that is just plain broken. Here are a few voices on the subject: From the Civil Eats website\, a great source of food policy information: “The connection of the protests with food\, of course\, runs from the local to the global\, the specific to the ephemeral. Food justice advocates are connecting with Occupy sites all around the country to donate fresh\, healthy\, local food or to help find kitchen space. On a broader philosophical level\, as Mark Bittman writes http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/11/finally-making-sense-on-wall-street/ in the Times\, “Whether we’re talking about food\, politics\, healthcare\, housing\, the environment\, or banking\, the big question remains the same: How do we bring about fundamental change?” But there are also clear and specific reasons that all of us working for a just and fair food system\, as the food movement should make the connection between our work and Occupy Wall Street explicit and strong. In the U.S. today\, the richest one percent hold 40 percent of the wealth\, while almost one in five Americans is on food stamps. Rampant Wall Street speculation on commodities is driving up food costs\, small farmers are being driven off their land\, and agribusiness holds monopoly control of our seeds and stores. In this climate\, the struggle against massive wealth disparities\, unregulated financial institutions\, and excessive corporate power is our struggle as well. Two points in the Declaration of the Occupation of New York City <http://nycga.cc/2011/09/30/declaration-of-the-occupation-of-new-york-city/> address the food system. While barely scratching the surface of the potential connections\, the protesters have provided an important opening for the food movement. Will we seize it?” To read more http://civileats.com/2011/10/13/why-the-food-movement-should-occupy-wall-street/ From the Slow Food USA Blog: The Path to Legislative Impact Heats Up with Food Day www.slowfoodusa.org/index.php/slow_food/blog_post/the_path_to_legislative_impact_heats_up_with_food_day/ Local Action Centerfood Co-op\, Sustainable Sea Cliff Cooperative\, Slow Food Huntington and Live Island Café have joined forces to provide material support for the Occupy Wall Street encampment in Zuccotti Park\, renamed Liberty Square. Anticipating increasingly difficult conditions as the movement advances in the face of cold weather\, these organizations are collecting clothing\, food\, and blankets to bring to the square on a regular basis. These organizations have found welcome support in the Occupy Wall Street movement for sustainable\, earth friendly alternatives to the corporate food system. Our commitment to small scale farmers and producers is fully consistent with calls worldwide for an economic model that rewards humane and equitable deployment of resources and shuns a short-sighted\, profit-above-all manipulation of capital. Our organizations are grateful to Occupy Wall Street inspiring students\, labor unions\, professionals\, middle class and poor to assert a fundamental truth: the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the few to the detriment of the many is inherently wrong\, and cannot continue. Centerfood Co-op\, Sustainable Sea Cliff Cooperative\, Slow Food Huntington and Live Island Café are employing their mailing lists and extensive community contacts to appeal for donations and coordinate delivery of goods to downtown Manhattan. Occupy Wall Street has an outpost on the North Shore. Contact: Christopher Moylan 631-424-2873
