DESCRIPTION:The Straw Bale Gardening Workshops will provide in a step-by-step fashion exactly what one needs to get started.  Local resources for Straw Bales will be shared\, and a limited number of bales will be available for purchase at each workshop.  Cost is $35 per person.  Payment is by PayPal. Cancellations must be made 7 days or more before the workshop date in order to receive a refund.  Workshops will be held outdoors- so dress accordingly.  In case of inclement weather\, a sheltered area will be used for the workshop. SUMMARY:Sustainability Institute at Molloy College Presents: Sustainable Living Film Series March 14th — The Island President
DESCRIPTION:        You are cordially invited to the Sustainable Living Film Series screening of the award winning documentary The Island President.  The Sustainable Living Film Series is a documentary series presented by the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College that screens films with a focus on environmental protection and sustainability\, and features a different organizational partner for each presentation.  Jon Shenk’s The Island President is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives\, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced—the literal survival of his country and everyone in it. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after thirty years of despotic rule\, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world\, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable.  The Island President captures Nasheed’s first year of office\, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009\, where the film provides a rare glimpse of the political horse-trading that goes on at such a top-level global assembly. Nasheed is unusually candid about revealing his strategies—leveraging the Maldives’ underdog position as a tiny country\, harnessing the power of media\, and overcoming deadlocks through an appeal to unity with other developing nations. When hope fades for a written accord to be signed\, Nasheed makes a stirring speech which salvages an agreement. Despite the modest size of his country\, Mohamed Nasheed has become one of the leading international voices for urgent action on climate change.  Vegan food\, popcorn and socializing at 6:00. SUMMARY:Let’s Eat! Films on Food: Farmageddon
DESCRIPTION:Americans’ right to access fresh\, healthy foods of their choice is under attack. Farmageddon tells the story of small\, family farms that were providing safe\, healthy foods to their communities and were forced to stop\, sometimes through violent ac-tion\, by agents of misguided government bureaucracies\, and seeks to figure out why.    Filmmaker Kristin Canty’s quest to find healthy food for her four children turned into an educational journey to discover why access to these foods was being threatened. What she found were policies that favor agribusiness and factory farms over small family-operated farms selling fresh foods to their communities. Instead of focusing on the source of food safety problems — most often the industrial food chain — policymakers and regulators implement and enforce solutions that target and often drive out of business small farms that have proven themselves more than capable of producing safe\, healthy food\, but buckle under the crushing weight of government regulations and excessive enforcement actions.    Farmageddon highlights the urgency of food freedom\, encouraging farmers and consumers alike to take action to preserve individuals’ rights to access food of their choice and farmers’ rights to produce these foods safely and free from unreasona-bly burdensome regulations.
